ABOUT PHYSICAL THERAPY:
A Time Honored Profession
Physical Therapy (PT) has been in exhistance in the US nearly 100 years. It came into the forefront of medical news during the polio epidemics in the early part of the twentieth century and became even more necessary durint the two world wars. Since then, the field of physical therapy has grown dramatically. According to Money Magazine, it is now one of the three top professions in demand nationwide. What began as medical intervention using physical agents such as heat, ice, and electricity (hence the name) has now come to encompass much broader medical intervention. Physical therapists not only rehabilitate persons with physcial impairment, they treat acute cardio-respiratory patients, burn patients, chronic pain patients, evaluate work stations for proper ergonomic design, act as consultants to athletes, and work in pediatric development as well.
The physical therapist today is educated not only in the use of physical modalities such as ultrasound, diathermy, hydrotherapy, microwave, ultraviolet, and laser, but the graduate of a "physical therapy program is an expert in the "hands-on approach" to treatment. These techniques may include massage, soft tissue mobilization and joint manipulation. In addition, the therapist is capable of designing specific exercise programs for both rehabilitation and prevention of injury.
The field of PT is constantly growing and now includes both master's and doctoral university degrees.
Please come back to this area frequently, as we intend to add useful info on a regular basis. And, who knows, perhaps you will tell us about a PT we should be aware of--are you, perhaps, the one? To help us maintain the quality of the Directory--for you and for others--we invite your personal experience by E-Mail.
