[Top of the page]HERE'S THE DIFFERENCE . . .
For consumer protection, in the USA, a growing number of state massage therapy (MT) boards, regulate the MT profession through licensing tests, ethical guidelines for professional conduct, and consumer mis-conduct phone lines. For your convenience, in addition to the Directory of MT State Boards, we also list the boards in our global Directory. Clearly, with the re-discovery of MT as a valid, reliable and economically viable health profession, more states are passing legislation which gives MT its long due legal status. In states without an MT licensing law, some city and other local government agencies require an MT Business license. Intended to protect the public from illicit sex, MT WEB CENTRAL finds such licensing unprofessional, ineffective, demeaning, and economically wasteful. Therefore, in all states not yet under MT laws, we create web-presence for fellow MTs on the basis of a license in another state and/or a national certificate issued by MT organizations which have been regulating MT from within the profession. Proof of education is another one of our Equivalency Qualifications
To complicate matters, a growing number of Beauty, Health & Fitness entrepreneurs who have observed the growing popularity of MT have been luring MTs--even the professionally licensed ones--into their beauty-salons, shopping-malls, store-fronts, locker-rooms, etc, where customers get a taste of a friendly rub. MT WEB CENTRAL understands the market forces and the MT organizational policies involved in the mushrooming of the "commercial massage variety." Usually, it takes one visit to realize the difference between professional-quality MT and the "assembly-line" vein. But we feel that the consumer has the right to know beforehand that commercial settings, cute and appealing as they may be, are usually not designed to offer professional-quality MT sessions. In fact, we have been told by many disappointed LicMTs who have worked in these non-professional settings that such assembly-line massage work is merely a means to entice customers into buying other products and services. Surely, almost anyone can benefit from a friendly, educated touch. But is it any wonder that in the absence of an underlying professional commitment coupled with the pressure to "volume-sell," there is neither the setting nor the time to focus the individual attention and develop the deep caring or client-centeredness that is an essential part of professional-quality MT?
